Reconstruction of the Heathen tempel of Uppåkra in Sweden by the Sven Rosborn, Museum of Foteviken. Excavations at Uppåkra in Skåne, Southern Sweden revealed a large site of c. 40 hectares with many interesting, although ill-understood, aspects. The building that has been seen as a temple is fairly small, just 13.5 m x 6 m. Uppåkra is a village and parish in Staffanstorp Municipality, in Scania, southern Sweden, located five kilometres south of Lund.The village is known for its Iron Age archaeological site, which has been actively excavated since 1996.

The first excavations at Uppåkra took place in 1934. While workmen were preparing the foundation for a house, they discovered cultural layers, several metres thick, with traces of the inhabitants who had lived there for generations. For many years Uppåkra had a somewhat mythic status among archaeologists. The main objectives were to define the World Heritage in both cultural and natural aspects; to enlist Sites and Monuments from the member countries which are of exceptional interest and universal value, the protection of which is the concern of all mankind; and to promote co-operation among all Nations and people to contribute for the protection of these universal treasures intact for future Uppåkra is situated approximately 5 km south of Lund in the Southern part of Sweden. This thesis strives to tell a story of archaeological knowledge production at the Uppåkra site in Scania, southern Sweden, through focusing upon the actual work on site.
